I'm multifaceted and highly educated. I have a BA in History and an MA in Museum Studies. But I couldn't make a living in a museum, so my hobby--computers--became my living. I'm now a charter member Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician. I aspire to be a professional writer and/or poet. I am a Christian and have been living by His grace for the last four years or so, despite the MegaStress and now the GigaStress. He keeps me going, and displays His glory still, in my life.

On to new writing!

I've finally finished my edit of Chapter 2 of The Honored. It was kind of fun reading stuff I'd written seven years ago. I'd forgotten some of it. So now, I'm ready to begin new writing on this story. I've got some ideas on where it leads.

    Status of Stories
  • The Honored: Finished editing the already written chapters 1 and 2. Now to new writing in Chapter 2
  • Purgatory: Still thinking about it.
  • A sequel to The Journey? I've been fighting that plot bunny for awhile. If it ever does get through my defenses, it will have to wait until at least The Honored is done.

New Middle-Earth Fanfiction Awards

Ainaechoiriel is convinced that I get more readers to my Blog than she does, so she wanted me to let everyone know about this.

Based on the alt.startrek.creative awards, in that they are comment-based, these Awards stand that chance of being great! If you read or write LOTR (or Silm or The Hobbit) fanfiction, please participate. Everyone who gets at least one vote gets something out of the awards: feedback! And we all know we could use more of that, right?

You have to join a YahooGroup to participate. Saves us from having to learn all that fancy coding. I know basic HTML and that's about it. So join the MEFAwards group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MEFAwards/. You can read the FAQ there, or if you want to read it before joining, try this site: http://mefawards.agreatserver.com/Awards%20FAQ.html

Know some good fan artists? We need them, too! Someone needs to make the banner graphic awards for us. There's a large variety that need to be made, as there are 14 main categories (and three prizes each!). We hope to get two banners submitted per prize so that we can have a contest for the banners as well.

    Status of Stories
  • The Honored Well, thanks to Documents to Go and Clie problems, I've had to redo my edits to chapter 1 about 6 times! But I finally got it, so I'm on my second round with chapter 2. Fortunately, I hadn't gotten very far the first time. I'm moving on now.
  • Purgatory Still thinking about it.
  • A sequel to The Journey? I've been fighting that plot bunny for awhile. If it ever does get through my defenses, it will have to wait until at least The Honored is done.

The April Fool's that went awry

Well, it went mostly ignored. I posted the first three pages of The Honored as a trailer saying "coming soon" and "A story SEVEN years in the making". After midnight, I posted a reply saying "April Fool's" and that the only non-truths in the trailer were the words "soon" and "SEVEN". It's not finished yet, so it will not be "soon" and will likely be closer to EIGHT years in the making by the time I'm done.

Still, I thought the graphic deaths of Kira and Bashir (not a spoiler anymore because I posted the trailer) might get some kind of reaction. I got one reaction from a beta reader saying I was evil. :-D Why yes, so nice of you to notice! I got another one after pointing out to trailer to someone on IM. She said it was "Cruel and Unusual". :-D And then today, a new ASCer looked it up and is now trying valiantly to wait patiently for me to finish it.

The good news is that I'm getting back into the story! I've just finished going back through the first chapter to update it (Kira is a Colonel now, for example) and to check for errors and inconsistencies with previous stories and the show. Now I'm ready for the second chapter. It's not finished yet, which means that once I'm through with the part that is already written, I'll be writing new stuff!

I can also say that the whole story takes place over about 1 week, Bajoran time. Generally speaking, a story that covers a longer period of time is a longer story. Oswiecim covered from early February to late March 1943 and took nearly 600 pages. Faith was about two weeks in the first part, perhaps two in the second part, and one in the third. And about the same length as Oswiecim. Healer, by contrast was a day or two, and is only ten pages long. Thus, I predict The Honored will be a novella, somewhere in the 150-300 page range. Of course, since it does deal mostly with just those two characters (with a few bits of home sprinkled here and there), it will spend more time per day than say, Oswiecim, which by necessity skipped whole days here and there. Thus, I can liken this one to the length of The Journey which covers a similar amount of time and goes through every single day, though not necessarily hour for hour.

To summarize that very rambly paragraph: It shouldn't take as long to write as Faith!

And if you're looking for that trailer, go to www.deja.com and do a search for my name in the alt.startrek.creative newsgroup between, say, March 30a nd April 3, 2004.

    Status of Stories
  • The Honored: Finished going over chapter 1. Moving on to Chapter 2.
  • Still considering picking up Purgatory on my own or in conjunction with Valerie Shearer.

Slow Going at the ASC Awards

The other categories weren't slow, but there has hardly been any votes for MIS and Overall. None for me. :-( There's still time, so I'll not give up hope yet.

I'm still going through the previously-written parts of The Honored. But I did give ASC an April Fool's preview. I posted the first three pages, just enough so that Kira and Bashir were quite dead. I waited until after midnight and posted an admission of the joke, but said only two things in the post were non-truths: 1) that the story would be coming soon. It may take awhile yet. 2) That it was 7 years in the making. It will likely be 8 by the time I'm done.

And yet, I only got two reactions. :-( again.
